Eric Fischl (IV)

Eric Fischl, Birthday party, 1980.

On the body
I just can't imagine a person one hundred percent comfortable in their body. Ever.
There are moments when the body becomes awkward and dfficult and betrays your internal life.
I'm interested in things that look like one thing and then become something else; and flip back and forth.
That has to be true of bodies as well.
I've used gestures of the body as a way of expressing two kinds of realities: one is the motor response to an action, and the other is a psychological response that torques the body in a certain way.

Eric Fischl, Saturday night (The aftermath bath), 1980.
